Finishing Polyurethane for Outdoor Projects

woodworkingshop

You may wonder why polyurethane is so popular for outdoor projects, and that's an excellent question. You'll find out about the different types of polyurethane: oil-based polyurethane (Wipe-on), oil-based polyurethane (Naphtha-based) and others. Moreover, you'll learn how to apply the finish with a brush to avoid drips and streaks. Remember that applying polyurethane to your home can be a tedious process.

Oil-based polyurethane

Use mineral oil or alcohol to thoroughly clean the surface before applying a polyurethane coat. Wiping the surface will remove air bubbles. To achieve a satisfactory result, most water-based polyurethanes will require three to four coats. To reduce the risk of bubbles, apply a thin coat of polyurethane. Before applying a finish, wipe it again with a lint-free cloth or mineral spirit.

Wipe-on polyurethane

Wipe-on finishing Polyurethane is an excellent alternative to oil-based brands. This type is water resistant and scratch-resistant. Wiping polyurethane, which does not require high-end spray booths, is more economical and can be applied directly without the use of a brush. You can thin the wipe-on adhesive with mineral spirits before you apply it to your project. Oil-based poly can be mixed 1:1 with mineral spirits, and wipe-on poly can be purchased pre-mixed.

Polyurethane thinned with naphtha

Before beginning the process of dipping a brush or rag into a bucket of polyurethane, you should wear protective gear. High levels of mineral spirits can cause severe skin irritation. You should dispose of any thinners that are used to thin polyurethane. When handling thinners, gloves are recommended. Do not add more substance to speed up the drying process.

Apply it using a brush

Two basic methods of applying polyurethane are recommended: brushing on and wiping off. The best protection is provided by brush on, which has minimal buildup and drips. However, wipe on is much easier than wiping off without the use of brushes. Brush-on finishes dry in about four to six hour. The application process is easy. Wipe on finishes take more coats but are better for stair balusters or other flat areas.

Drying time

Many factors influence the drying time of finishing Polyurethane. Apply the coating on warm days to get the best results. This can be avoided by sanding the coat again and applying it again. The coating can crack if it is applied in extremely hot temperatures. If you are using oil-based Polyurethane, make sure you work at 70°F or 21°C.

How To

How do you measure wood accurately?

We have several ways to measure wood. We use a digital scale (a tool for measuring distances), a laser-level (used to level your work surface), as well as a bubble level (used in order to level your work surface).

A digital caliper can have two jaws, which open and close. The one jaw holds the object to be measured, while the other measures distance between them. The digital scale is perfect for measuring tiny distances such as wood thickness.

Laser levels are equipped with an infrared light beam, which projects a line across a floor. A red dot is created by the laser. The line can be viewed down to determine if the surface has an even surface. Laser levels are best for checking the accuracy of large surfaces.

Bubble levels look similar to a compass. The device's center bubble is visible. The device will inform you if the surface is level if the bubble is in the center. For checking the accuracy of small areas, bubble levels are useful.
